Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of a substantial work of moral and religious instruction, headed "For my beloved Son John." The manuscript exhorts his son to attend to the duty of praying, unlike the "Papists," who "so little mind their Prayers that they are faine to have beads to count when they have said all." Shawe also reminds his son to remember the Sabbath; attend to the four "last things"; not to set his heart and mind too immoderately "on any things in this world"; read the Scripture every day; and meditate on his sins often. Elsewhere, he mentions "the Solemne League & Covenant for Reformation and defence of Religion...lately taken by the Long-Parliament" and expresses hope that "this Question so troublesome to many now, will not much concerne you, who was not borne till about 20 yeares after that Nationall Covenant was first taken," and declares that he wishes "it either had never beene taken, or else had never beene forbidden to be observed."
